During the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal aimed to provide economic relief, recovery, and reform to a struggling nation. As part of this effort, federally funded programs supported public art, job creation, and infrastructure development—including significant projects in Native communities. However, while the New Deal created opportunities for Native artists, it also shaped and, at times, distorted the portrayal of Indigenous identity and culture through government-sponsored art and policy.
