Often called the "Gateway to Native America," Gallup is a threshold to its multiple indigenous neighbors and celebrates the rich arts and centuries old cultural traditions that come with being a western…
Gallup has dozens of unique murals inspired by regional history and cultures that you can explore both downtown and around the community.
Over 20 colorful murals are within walking distance of each other in the downtown area. These works of art vary in style and size, working together to share Gallup's rich and romantic history, patriotism and Native American culture. A short walk through downtown will reveal murals that depict scenes from mining, rodeos and western life, with others commemorating the Long Walk or showcasing Native American trading.
Through a series of interactive maps, visitors and locals are guided to these storied and striking paintings by way of curated routes. Expanded details are available for each installation, offering glimpses into each artist's inspiration and the symbolism found throughout their work. The Downtown Mural Walking Tour includes stops at 24 different murals, including a large painting on the side of Jewels and Java by Anthony Sanchez that depicts Zuni dancers, ancestral pueblos, petroglyphs and more. The Southside Arts Walking Tour, explores the murals, sculptures and art installations found to the south of I-40, with a stop at Perry Null Trading Company to view Lawrence Spencer's mural celebrating Native American arts. Additional art awaits just north of I-40, where the North Side Arts Walking Tour passes by stunning works, including a colorful, large-scale mural in honor of late local artist, Andrew Martinez.
